Virtual private server (VPS) is a term used by Internet hosting services to refer to a virtual machine. The phrase is used for emphasizing that the virtual machine, although operating in software on the same physical computer as other customers’ virtual machines, is functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer, is committed to the individual customer’s needs, offers the privacy of a separate physical computer, which enables it to be configured to operate as a server computer (i.e. to run server software). The phrase virtual dedicated server or VDS is utilized less often for the same idea, however it may indicate that the server does not use burst/shared memory through multiple machines, along with individual Processor cores.

In addition to reducing hardware and power expenses, visualization enables businesses to run their older applications on older versions of an os on the same machine as newer applications.

Each virtual server can run its very own full-fledged operating system which enables it to be individually restarted.Dividing a single server so that it appears as multiple servers has been common practice on mainframe computers and mid-range computers such as the IBM AS/400. It has become more widespread with the progression of visualization software and technologies for microcomputers.

The physical server typically runs a hypervisor which is given the job of creating, releasing, and managing the resources of “guest” os’s, or virtual machines. These guest os’s are assigned a share of resources of the physical server, typically in a manner in which the guest is not aware of any other physical resources save for those allotted to it through the hypervisor.

The guest system may be fully virtualized, paravirtualized, or a hybrid of the two.

In a completely virtualized environment, the guest is given an emulated or virtualized set of hardware and it’s oblivious that this hardware isn’t strictly physical. The hypervisor in this instance must translate, map, and convert requests with the guest system into the appropriate resource requests for the host, resulting in significant overhead. Virtually all systems can be virtualized using this method, as it involves no changes of the os, however a CPU supporting virtualization is necessary for the majority of hypervisors that perform total virtualization.

In a paravirtualized environment, the guest is aware of the hypervisor and interfaces directly with the host system’s resources, with the hypervisor implementing real-time access control and resource allocation. This translates into near-native performance since the guest sees the same hardware as the host which enables it to thus communicate with it natively. UNIX-like systems, for instance Linux, some variants of BSD, Plan 9, and OpenSolaris are able to support this method of virtualization. Nevertheless, installing operating systems as paravirtualized guests has a tendency to require additional information about the os in order to have it use special hypervisor-aware kernels and devices.

Some examples of paravirtualization-capable hypervisors are Xen, Virtuozzo, Vserver, and OpenVZ (which is the open source and development variation of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers).

Hybrid or partial paravirtualization, is full virtualization, but in which the guest utilizes paravirtualized drivers for key components for example networking and disk I/O, resulting in greatly increased I/O performance. As a result, it is a common solution for operating systems which can’t be modified (for various reasons) to support paravirtualization.

One example of a hybrid hypervisor is Kernel-based Virtual Machine.
Vps fill the gap between shared web hosting services and dedicated hosting services, giving independence from some other clients of the VPS service in software terms but at less cost than a physical dedicated server. As a VPS runs its own copy of its operating system, customers have superuser-level access to that os instance, and can install almost any software that runs on the Operating system. Certain software doesn’t run very well within a virtualized environment, such as virtualizers themselves; some VPS providers place further restrictions, but they are generally lax compared to those in shared hosting environments. Because of the number of virtualization clients generally operating on one machine, a VPS commonly has limited processor time, RAM, and disk space.
